THE FATBOYS RC STORY
FROM GRASSHOPPER KID TO FATBOY RC LIFER
Some kids grow up. I just got bigger RC cars.
That first Tamiya Grasshopper changed everything. While the other kids in the ’80s were getting Hornets handed to them, I was sweating through odd jobs to earn every penny for my beloved entry-level kit. That green machine might have been basic, but it was MINE – built with my own hands and powered by pure passion.
THE EDUCATION OF A GEARHEAD
That painfully slow 380 motor wasn’t cutting it for long. I still remember the weeks of saving, the triumphant walk into One 0 One Models in Chatham, and the disappointment when my upgraded 540 motor STILL couldn’t match my friend’s stock Hornet.
But that’s when the real education began:
- Discovering the dark arts of battery modification
- The revelation that bearings could transform performance
- Learning to fabricate my own parts when replacements were nowhere to be found
Each broken part wasn’t a disaster – it was a masterclass in mechanics that no classroom could provide.
THE FATBOYS RC ODYSSEY
Over the decades, my RC journey has taken flight (quite literally). From cars to planes, I’ve:
- Watched gliders disappear into the horizon, never to return
- Rebuilt vehicles that looked destined for the scrap heap
- Mastered the art of the “make-do” modification long before YouTube tutorials existed
WITNESSING THE RTR REVOLUTION
The explosion of Ready-To-Run models changed everything. Our nerdy little hobby burst into the mainstream, bringing in drivers who want the thrill without the build.
Do I miss the old days? Sometimes. But watching the hobby grow has been incredible.
Do I still build kits? Absolutely. There’s nothing like customizing from the ground up.
THE FATBOYS RC FLEET
Today, the Fatboys RC garage is home to a growing family of machines that my younger self could only dream about. My sons and I currently run:
